Ana - suromai from Greek: "lift ones' clothes"
is an act of exposing ones' genitals used by women
in order to scare off the powers of darkness,
a predator, an enemy or a destructive power
of nature. The act of ana-suromai could also
increase the fertility of land and foster the growth of plants.
In many communities of Africa, New Guinea and the
ancient countries of Europe, the act was to humiliate
violent perpetrators of dishonorable or insulting deeds.
The more women exposed their vulva, the greater power of the act.
It has been observed from ancient till present times throughout
the whole world - in places totally independent of one another.
It was associated with the cult of the vagina and its perception
as a magic gate through which each of us came into the world.
