Interakcje under the banner of the audience – 14^th International Action Art Festival InterAkcje

InterAkcje this year participated as a member of an international network of performance art festivals entitled "A Space for Live Art" that includes seven organisations. The festival was co-curated by Mara Vujic (Slovenia), Antoine Pickels (Belgium) and Nieves Correa (Spain). This allowed for a broad range of artists, especially featuring very young ones. The so called OFF programme was prepared by Janusz Baldyga. As in previous years, the name "OFF" was only a formality, because often performances by the artists who were invited to participate in this "OFF" category, were more interesting than the ones by the more experienced artists.

Performance Art is an art form, like painting, drawing, writing, poetry, installation, video, photography, sculpture, installation, architecture, object, theatre, dance, film, music... it is a way to express thoughts and ideas in an artistic manner, a tool to create art. Performance Art is located within a broader field called Action Art, which historically emerged in Europe after the Second World War. Performance art is the creative act of an artist in front of, or with an audience at a certain place/space/site and during a certain timeframe it forms the centre of attention. During a live process the artist and his actions are transformed into a general readable sign.

Six Days of performance art and video was an event organized by the Naughton Gallery at Queens, Belfast during the week from 30th April until 5th May 2012, in collaboration with Bbeyond and Black Market International. I have not seen all performances, consequently this is not a review of the event. I watched the beginning and the end, only.

Alexia Mellor's reply to our project: Feminism in art of artists born on or after 1970

Humor and play have a longstanding tradition in art as a tool for subversion. Feminism in particular used humor’s ability to destabilize social norms and critically address socio-political issues. In my own practice I investigate the potential of humor to offer insight into the continuing questions of identity formation that the Feminist movement of the 1970s raised. Using performance as a methodology, three of my recent projects address recurring themes from feminism: the workplace, the body, and the domestic.

Ephemeral fixed. Ephemeral art in the Visegrad countries

It is difficult to find a balance between the accounts of history given by historians and those given by artists. This is one of the reasons I was very much looking forward to the Ephemeral fixed event that took place in Lodz in March. The programme promised a series of events, distinguishing these 'histories' from each other while also reinforcing them. It also showed a significant interest in a socio-cultural/sociological approach which gave the event added relevance. Thanks to the Visegrad Fund, artists and art historians / critics gathered from the four Visegrad countries to exchange their experiences, their histories and, most of all, their art.
