Marilyn Arsem’s reply to our projects: What is performance art? and Timeline of performance art

In my simplest description, I say that performance art is "an action by an artist, created and executed as an art work." In speaking of performance art in such neutral terms, I hope to include the broad expanse of human activities that has been or will be identified as performance art. I want to honor the generosity of a field that encourages an inclusive notion of human actions as art, one where the artist defines the work first, and where challenging the status quo is encouraged.

Art or Documentation?

Peggy Phelan once wrote: Performance’s only life is in the present. Performance cannot be saved, recorded, documented, or otherwise participate in the circulation of representations of representations: once it does so, it becomes something other than performance. To the degree that performance attempts to enter the economy of reproduction it betrays and lessens the promise of its own ontology…. The document of a performance then is only a spur to memory, an encouragement of memory to become present.²

The definition of a certain artistic activity is like a compass that is necessary to navigate in the labyrinth of one’s own imagination. Unfortunately it is not always effective when it comes to somebody else’s imagination. My first definition of performance art appeared in the beginning of the 80s, during an action of the group “Circle of Coexistence”. The definition was: "Answer today, question tomorrow"

Lukasz Bialkowski: In July your exhibition was in Krakow in the Pryzmat Gallery. You showed your works together with Zbynek Janacek and Marek Sibinsky. More than half a year ago there was also your individual exhibition in Rondo Sztuki in Katowice (Poland). Your relationship with the Polish artistic community is strong and it started in the 60s when you participated in the Krzywe Kolo Gallery exhibitions...
